Yesterday was the two week mark since the fire. The past 14 days have been some of the slowest and fastest days of my life as we have had to navigate some incredibly challenging situations. Yet through everything we’ve been through we have had a deep sense of peace, comfort, inner rest… and yes, even joy. It isn’t because we’re “good people” or “super saints” who have a knack of handling stress and pressures well. No, this kind of peace and rest doesn’t come from within ourselves, this only comes from Jesus.
I ran across this song, “Come Unto Jesus,” right after the fire. As I was driving down the road still trying to take in all of the transitions we were having to navigate and go through, I got choked up as I listened to this song. This was so real and raw. One line of it goes “come unto Jesus, He is enough… lay down your burdens, He is enough… come unto Jesus, rest in His love.” Wow, this was exactly what we were experiencing! By laying down our burdens at the feet of Jesus we were experiencing His peace, rest, joy, and love… even while we were facing mountains of challenges and unknowns.
Friend… we all go through “stuff.” It’s just part of life living in a world broken by sin. But can I encourage you… if you’re in the thick of “it” right now, or in the future when you go through a hard situation… please, don’t try to handle it on your own. Jesus is willing to walk with you through the difficulties. You never have to be alone.
The amazing thing about being a follower of Jesus isn’t that He keeps bad things from happening to His own, but that He walks with us through hard things, and He is a very present help in times of trouble (Psalm 46). Alissa and I and our kids have been through a lot… but we’ve never been alone, Jesus has been there every step of the way. He has shown His mighty strength to uphold us when we were worried, weak, and fearful and has given us deep peace and genuine joy as we’ve seen Him answer prayer after prayer.
The gratitude that has been flowing from my heart over the past 14 days has been so amazing and spontaneous! Lol, just the other day I opened the frig where we were staying and there was 4 or 5 items in there (we hadn’t had a chance to go shopping), but I was SO deeply thankful for every single item we had in there.
Friend, come unto Jesus, He is enough.
